Emperor Shomu built this temple for his son in 728 as the Kinshoji Temple.
In 743 this temple began to be called as Toudaiji Temple. Main bulding
is in the biggest class of wooden one.

Koufukuji Temple is a leading center of Hosso School of Buddism.There are
excellent buildings such as the five-storied Pagoda, the Central Golden
Hall etc. There also the famous sculpture of Asura is displayed, which
was made in Tenpyo-period ( 729 - 749 ).
